Preparing Sacramento for Extreme Weather: Your Input Matters
As the impacts of climate change become increasingly evident, cities like Sacramento are stepping up their efforts to adapt. The launch of SacAdapt late last year marks a significant initiative aimed at fortifying the city's transportation infrastructure against extreme weather events, which include intense heat, flooding, and other severe conditions.
Get Involved in Future-Ready Planning
The City of Sacramento and SacRT are currently in phase two of this planning effort. They seek community feedback to prioritize transportation resilience. By engaging with local residents, officials aim to ensure that the strategies developed reflect the concerns and needs of the community.
“The past year of technical analysis has helped us understand extreme weather impacts on our transportation systems,” explains Sarah Kolarik, Sustainability Specialist. “By making our findings accessible, we want community members to be better equipped to navigate Sacramento safely, no matter the weather.”
Participate and Influence Change
Community members are encouraged to respond to an online survey by October 31 to voice their opinions on transportation needs and priorities. Furthermore, opportunities for in-person engagement exist during key events such as the City Connect Mixer on September 18 and the Climate Justice Festival on September 21.
Looking Towards a Greener Future
The project team expects to present a draft plan for review in early 2026. The shared insights from both community feedback and technical analysis will play a pivotal role in shaping Sacramento's transportation resilience strategy.
In a time where environmental concerns are paramount, contributing to SacAdapt is an opportunity for Sacramento residents and businesses alike to influence the city’s future. Strengthening our roads and transit against extreme weather is not just about infrastructure; it’s about ensuring the community remains strong and connected during challenging times.
